What Kinds of Termites Live in Florida?
While many types of termites are present in our region, three in particular pose the greatest threat to homeowners:
- Subterranean termites live underground but surface to build their nests in wet wood and to feed on wood and other items that contain cellulose. Formosan Subterranean termites, also known as super termites, are the most common termites in Florida and are also the most destructive
- Drywood termites live in the wood that they’re infesting. They are a year-round concern in Florida but are most active during their swarming season in spring and early summer.
- Dampwood termites are most often found in wood exposed to moisture, such as roofing or siding that is frequently exposed to rain, sprinkler irrigation, or moisture in the soil.
