Their body is covered in a short thick hair and they have a long bushy tail that they use to balance themselves as they leap from tree to tree, their tail also comes in handy to help keep them warm.
When are Eastern Gray Squirrels most active?
Eastern gray squirrels are most active during the day, when they can be seen happily scampering across lawns, roofs, or jumping from tree to tree.
What attracts Eastern Gray Squirrels?
Eastern gray squirrels are drawn to properties that offer them plenty of access to their basic needs- food, water, and safe shelter. Eastern gray squirrels are omnivores and therefore have a very varied diet, but they especially like to feed on seeds, nuts, and berries. This species of tree squirrel creates their nests inside of old woodpecker holes or inside of natural tree cavities.
Where are you likely to find Eastern Gray Squirrels?
Eastern gray squirrels live several different habitats including wooded areas, urban areas, and suburban areas. As we have greatly expanded our habitat, squirrels have had to expand theirs. In addition to living out in the wild, Eastern gray squirrels are becoming a very common pest inside of homes, commercial facilities, and other buildings. Inside Eastern gray squirrels can be found nesting in attic spaces, basements, behind wall voids, and in crawl spaces.
Are Eastern Gray Squirrels dangerous or destructive?
Eastern gray squirrels are both a dangerous and destructive pest. When living inside of structures these squirrels have the potential to cause extensive damage to walls, insulation, pipes, wires, and personal items; along with contaminating food sources. Eastern gray squirrels are wild animals and if they become cornered or feel threatened while living in your home they may lash out and decide to bite or scratch. Also, they can introduce bacteria into your home and other dangerous pests including fleas, mites, and ticks.
