Why do South Florida Boats Require Marine Termite Treatment Services?

Everything you love about boating in South Florida and beyond also appeals to a variety of embarrassing and destructive pests. They thrive in our year-round summer climate. Termites feed on the interior wood of your boat, and other pests have plenty of hiding places onboard to live and breed. For a chartered boat, this can mean loss of revenue and unhappy clients.

Termites can go undetected for some time.  In fact, Drywood termites can lay dormant in wood for years, and Subterranean termites will hide in the most unlikely of places, which is why they are often called silent killers. They will stow away in places like the engine compartment, between the fiberglass and wood layers, or in areas like the bilge where you rarely go.  Often by the time you see them, the damage is done. These termite colonies can have hundreds of thousands of members, and the queen can live 30-50 years!

How to Identify a Termite Problem on Your Boat

Need to know if you’re facing a termite infestation? Look for these signs:
  • Wings – Termite wings will appear, especially near the holes where they create colonies inside wood.
  • Rotted wood – Holes will begin to appear, and wood will start to become hollow once termites begin to feed.
  • Frass – Frass is termite waste and will look like tiny pellets that may resemble coffee grounds or poppy seeds.
  • Swarmers – These are termites who are moving to establish a new colony.

When you need to get rid of pesky pantry pests, ants, beetles, or wood-destroying insects, Nozzle Nolen’s marine termite treatment services will keep you sailing above water on happy seas….no stowaways with Nozzle Nolen!

Is Your Boat Safer at Home or the Marina?

While parked at the marina, you have others to worry about. If a neighboring boat or the marina itself has an infestation, this problem can easily spread to your vessel. Similarly, if your boat is trailered at your home, nearby infestations can spread there too.

Swarming termites don’t discriminate either. They are relentless in pursuit of a new food source, whether that food source is at the marina or your home.

The truth is, termites love our warm South Florida weather. Unfortunately, this means your boat can be at risk for termites at both your home and the marina.

Nozzle Nolen’s Most Popular Boat Termite Treatment Services

There are three types of services we offer for marine termite treatment:

  • Professional heat treatment
  • Complete structure tenting
  • Spot treatments

Termites will attack any form of wood on a boat, including cabinets, hatches, furniture, and even inside the engine compartment are all at risk. If you have a small colony of termites, spot treatment with termiticides may provide temporary relief. Isolated heat treatments can also be used in some situations.

Our preferred method is fumigating using a tape and seal method. We use tape and plastic sheeting to seal the boat instead of a tent. This way, you don’t have to worry about dirty tarps draping over your clean boat.

If necessary, tenting on the water will provide the maximum benefit of a fumigant entering every nook and cranny to attack pesky termites, ensuring your vessel is pest-free from bow to stern.
