What is IPM and why is it important?
The EPA defines Integrated Pest Management (IPM), as “an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.”
The IPM approach can be applied to both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, such as the home, garden, and workplace. IPM takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides. Nozzle Nolen employs IPM programs and believes that these practices are part and parcel with Green services.
Not all insects are pests!
It is important to remember that there are also beneficial insects which are instrumental in maintaining a natural, ecological balance. After all, if not for the frogs, lizards, snakes and spiders, humans probably couldn’t live on planet earth. Earthworms aerate the soil, ladybugs prey on aphids and other injurious insects. Bees pollinate our plants.
It is only when insects invade our homes or threaten the health of our family or property that they become pests.
